• Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

    Carpal tunnel syndrome, (CTS) may be defined as compression of the median nerve, beneath the flexor retinaculum, on the inner surface of the wrist.

    The flexor retinaculum is also referred to as the transverse carpal ligament, or anterior annular ligament. It is a band of fibrous tissue, which lies over various nerves and arteries.

    SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

    The main symptoms of CTS are pain, numbness and tingling in the thumb, index and middle finger. The pain may radiate up the arm and weak grip strength may occur as the muscles begin to waste away.

    RISK FACTORS:

    • Repetitive wrist work, (for example, computer work, drilling or work involving a strong hand grip);
    • Pregnancy;
    • Rheumatoid arthritis;
    • Obesity;
    • Hypothyroidism.
