• Osteopathic Treatment for Arthritis

If a joint is suffering from wear and tear, it is termed degenerative, and diagnosed as “osteoarthritis”.

The symptoms of osteoarthritis include: Joint pain, stiffness, swelling, deformity and loss of function. The tender joints may even be unstable, (giving an audible cracking sound on movement) with bone spurs, (extra bone) laid down over a period of time, as the body compensates for lack of stability.

The causes of osteoarthritis include: Increased age, trauma, obesity, repetitive stress, (for example, occupation), limb mis-alignment, (where the angle of the limbs is not correct, creating an uneven distribution of force on musculoskeletal structures; genetics, bone deformity, (from birth) and mental stress.

Osteopathy can help by utilizing a variety of safe, non-invasive techniques to increase joint space, articulate tissues and relieve pain with regards to associated muscular tightness. The patient typically finds that suddenly the range of motion in the neck, for example has increased, relieving pain, swelling, discomfort and stiffness! The patient is guided through an effective bespoke program, including exercise, diet and pain management advice to achieve optimal results.

Unfortunately, some people including medical professionals believe that nothing can be done for degenerative joints, except damage limitation, i.e. painkillers. We strongly believe to the contrary – we can make a huge difference to the quality of life, restoring a smile to the face of a relieved patient!

The other form of arthropathies are inflammatory, e.g. Rheumatoid arthritis, which is a systemic disease involving not just the joints, but also the whole body. By using a gentle cranial approach, pain and swelling are relieved.

Treatment is usually gentle and may require several sessions to get effective results. Nevertheless, osteopaths are joint specialists and treat patients daily suffering from arthritic symptoms.
