• Annular (Disc) Tear

When the tough outer surface of an intervertebral disc, (annulus fibrosus) rips, it is called an annular tear. This condition can even occur in the centre of the disc and extend all the way to the outside. Each type of tear will present with a different level of pain, (from non-existent to excruciating).

There are many causes of an annular tear which The Sports Injuries Specialist – Registered Osteopath – Chelsea Osteopaths, Harrow Osteopaths, Wembley Osteopaths will diagnose and treat effectively and professionally. The neck and back are responsible for supporting the majority of a person’s weight, making them susceptible to a great deal of wear and tear. An intervertebral disc sometimes responds to this wear and tear by gradually breaking down as a person ages, occasionally leading to an annular tear.

Any condition that causes the body to diminish over time is degenerative, which can be true for an annular tear. This condition can also be caused by traumatic injury. Sudden and impactful force, (from high-impact sports) can apply excessive pressure to the annulus fibrosus, causing an intervertebral disc to tear, for example whilst lifting weight. Car or motorbike accidents can also cause traumatic injury that may lead to an annular tear. Any excessive force, no matter the cause, can lead to damage of the disc.

Sometimes, a person may even bend down to pick up a pen and tear a spinal disc. We often refer to this as, “the straw which broke the camel’s back”.

Years of inactivity, in sedentary occupation may lead to wasting of essential spinal muscles. The disc then is predisposed to straining or tearing, due to lack of muscular support, or inactivity and locking of spinal joints, above the area affected for example.

Whether an annular tear is caused by the aging process or a sudden injury, several treatment options can provide patients with relief from the pain that is often associated with this condition. Patients should contact The Sports Injuries Specialist – Registered Osteopath – Chelsea Osteopaths, Harrow Osteopaths, Wembley Osteopaths for an accurate diagnosis and a professional, effective treatment plan for rapid recovery.

Symptoms: An annular tear causes most patients to experience pain that can vary from moderate to severe. Discomfort is often associated with this condition as the outer third of an intervertebral disc’s annulus pulposus, (or tough exterior) is highly innervated. Pain in the neck and/or back can occur when the nerves become disrupted and irritated as a result of an annular tear. Most patients complain of excruciating pain in the neck or back. It is worth noting that some patients are completely asymptomatic, though the majority do feel a great deal of pain and come into The Sports Injuries Specialist – Registered Osteopath’s office limping, with the help of their partner, or with the aid of crutches.
