• Difference between a Chiropractor and an Osteopath

    Osteopathy

Osteopaths and Chiropractors are both considered spinal experts. Some people however tend to get the two professions confused. On their surfaces, they both look almost the same but in reality the two schools of thought are unique and their approach to patient care and therapy is very different. A Chiropractor is a person who is interested in how a person’s body works, but views the working’s of a body primarily through the spinal and muscular systems. Usually a Chiropractor focuses on pain relief and injury recovery, using spinal and joint adjustments, massage, and rehabilitative exercise to help a patient heal, as well as working with the patient in other areas of his life, (primarily diet and exercise programs).

An Osteopath looks at the patient’s whole body, as well as the spinal, muscular and joint systems. An Osteopath will conduct a thorough examination of a patient’s entire body to diagnose the patient’s problem. An Osteopath is usually contacted in a patient’s effort to reduce pain or heal from an injury, but the Osteopath helps with a variety of other problems as well. Methods of treatment involve manual therapy, spinal and joint adjustments, deep tissue work, rehabilitative exercises, ergonomical assessment and dietary advice.

A Chiropractic session will last approximately 15 minutes, compared to 30-45 minutes for an Osteopathic session. A Chiropractor will often manipulate the spine and end the treatment there. An Osteopath will work on a “chain” of things. For example, a patient suffering from low back pain will have his spine manipulated, (depending on their age and condition), with the Osteopath also evaluating the pelvic, gluteal and ilio-psoas regions respectively. In the event of an arthritic patient, a Chiropractor may still manipulate away, whereas an Osteopath will use gentle, non-manipulative harmonic or mobilisational techniques which elderly patients always tend to prefer.

Both Chiropractors and Osteopaths will use treatments increasing mobility up to a joints normal/physiological range of motion where a restrictive lesion is found. Both professions may achieve this via manipulation, (HVLAT), whereas an Osteopath may also achieve this employing gentler techniques, such as joint mobilisation/articulation.

An interesting fact is that Chiropractic therapy is actually derived from Osteopathy. Osteopathy was invented by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in 1872 and Chiropractic care was invented by Daniel David Palmer, a student of Dr. Still in 1895.
